What Is a Microdrama?
Microdrama is one of the fastest-growing formats in entertainment. Here is what it is, who makes it, and how people get paid.
What is a microdrama?
- A microdrama is a scripted story told in short vertical episodes, usually 30 to 120 seconds each, made to be watched on a phone. A series commonly runs 60 to 100 episodes, and each episode ends on a cliffhanger. People also call the format micro drama, vertical drama, vertical series, vertical TV or vertical entertainment.
How is a vertical drama different from a TV show?
- Episodes are framed for a 9:16 phone screen instead of a landscape TV, they run about a minute or two instead of 22 to 60 minutes, and every episode ends on a hook so the viewer keeps swiping. Shoots are much shorter too, often a couple of weeks for a whole series.
How do microdramas make money?
- Most revenue comes from a hook-then-paywall model. The first episodes are free, often promoted on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, and later episodes unlock through coins, subscriptions or pay-per-episode. Some platforms also run ads, and brands fund series directly. Who owns the audience and the IP decides who keeps the money, which is a core topic at the summit.
Which apps stream microdramas?
- ReelShort, DramaBox and DramaWave are among the best known dedicated apps. Studios and producers also release vertical series on TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Who makes microdramas?
- Production companies, independent filmmakers, writers, actors and crews, plus a growing group of AI filmmakers who build whole series with generative tools. Platforms and studios commission and distribute them.
How do you make an AI microdrama?
- Start with a one sentence premise, a small cast and a few locations. Lock a reference set so characters look the same in every shot, prompt in 9:16 from the first line, and plan for human editing, sound and continuity checks at the end. At Micro Drama Summit, Austin Zartman shows how he made a 15 episode animated vertical series, ASHES, for under $1,000.
